UPDATE: I have updated my Guild block planting recommendations based on a more comprehensive rotation system.
With all the variables of companion planting, I can’t remember which:
- plants can be planted together
- which plants can’t be planted together
- and the plants that can and can’t be planted in the following rotation plan.
To get my head around this, I developed a guild based block planting plan:
- BB – Beans and brassicas
- ARC – Roots and Cukes
- 3 sisters – Corn, pumpkin, beans
- Potatoes
- Celery & Leeks
And two auxilary guilds:
- GMw – winter green manure
- GMs – summer green manure
Rotation plan is:
BB => GMw => ARC => GMs => BB
Guild descriptions
Beans and Brassicas
- Beans, peas and other legumes
- Brassicas: broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, brussel sprouts, chinese vegetables, mizuna, radishes, landcress.
- Fennel, dill, coriander
- Tomatoes, climbing beans, basil
- Eggplant, capsicum, bush beans, basil
- Basil, Marigold (preferably Tagetes Minutae)
(plants on the same line are interchangeable)
Follow with Green Manure (winter)
Alliums, roots and cukes
- Alliums: garlic, onions, spring onions, shallots
- Root vegetables: carrots, parsnip, beetroot
- Cucurbits: cucumber, zucchini, squash, melons, pumpkins
- Lettuce, spinach, silverbeet, basil
- Corn, sunflower
(plants on the same line are interchangeable)
Follow with Green Manure (summer)
3 sisters
- Corn, sunflowers
- Beans, peas, legumes
- Pumpkin, melons

Follow with Green Manure (winter)
Potatoes
- Potatoes
- Marigold (preferably Tagetes Minutae)
- Corn, Beans, Horseradish
- Tansy, nasturtium, coriander, and catnip

Follow with oats, legumes, mustard, chrysanthemums, marigold.
Celery & Leeks
- Celery, Leek
Follow with brassica, carrots, lettuce, wheat

Green Manure (winter)
- Oats
- Broad beans, snow peas, BQ mulch, wooly pod vetch, fenugreek, lupins
- Mustard greens

Green Manure (summer)
- Clover, buckwheat, cowpea, chickpea, lucerne, mungbeans
- Nasturtium, marigold, sweet pea, borage, alyssum, basil, caraway, coriander, cosmos, dill, baby’s breath, alfalfa, radish, butterfly flower, dianthus
